BILL SUMMARY:
AB 1890 requires the Department of Corrections (CDC) to
require inmates working outside the prison grounds on road
cleanup or fire crews to wear distinctive clothing.
Fiscal Impact (in thousands)
Major Provisions 2000-01 2001-02
2002-03 Fund
Prisoner clothing Unknown costs, potentially $479
annually General
STAFF COMMENTS: SUSPENSE FILE.
Thre are about 4,200 inmates who work on fire and road
crews each year. According to CDC staff, the Prison
Industry Authority can make jumpsuits for about $19 each,
and assuming they need six jumpsuits per inmate per year
(community work crews apparently go through about 5.26
jumpsuits per year), increased costs would be $479,000
annually.
