An act to amend Section 2117 of the Elections Code, relating to elections.

AB 1020, as introduced, Ridley-Thomas. Elections: voter registration.

Existing law sets forth the procedures for registering to vote and processing voter registration. Existing law requires, if a voter reregisters or transfers his or her registration from one precinct to another, that the former address be entered in the prior registration portion of the affidavit and the former registration be canceled, except as specified.

This bill would instead require that the former address be maintained with the voter record and the registration be updated.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no. State-mandated local program: no.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

SECTION 1.  

Section 2117 of the Elections Code is amended
to read:

2117.  

Except as provided in Section 2119, if a voter reregisters
or transfers his or her registration from one precinct to another,
the former address shall be begin delete entered in the prior registration portion
of the affidavit, and the former registration shall thereupon be
canceled end delete begin insert maintained with the voter record and the registration
shall thereupon be updated end insert .
