Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 61—Relative to Shelter Pet Awareness Month.

SCR 61, Galgiani. Shelter Pet Awareness Month.

This measure would declare October of each year as Shelter Pet Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, Each year, between 700,000 and 800,000 animals are taken in by California’s public and private shelters; and

WHEREAS, Less than half of these animals are adopted into new homes; and

WHEREAS, Animal shelters have limited resources and cannot accommodate all of the animals that need help; and

WHEREAS, In the United States, three to four million shelter pets are euthanized every year due to overcrowding; and

WHEREAS, The Legislature seeks to promote shelter pet adoptions by raising public awareness of shelter animals; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby declares the month of October of each year as Shelter Pet Awareness Month; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
