BILL ANALYSIS SCR 32 Page 1 Date of Hearing: June 11, 2007 ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION Pedro Nava, Chair SCR 32 (Hollingsworth) - As Introduced: March 19, 2007 SENATE VOTE : 36-0 SUBJECT : State Route 8 SUMMARY : Designates an overpass on State Route (SR) 8 as the Army Sergeant Brud Joseph Cronkrite Memorial Bridge. Specifically, this bill : 1)Recounts the life and military career of Brud Cronkite. 2)Designates the overpass on SR 8 at Buckman Springs Road in Pine Valley as the "Army Sergeant Brud Joseph Cronkrite Memorial Bridge." 3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signage requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation, and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs. EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating and maintaining state highways. This responsibility includes the installation and maintenance of highway signs. FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown. This bill was withdrawn from the Senate Appropriations Committee pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8. COMMENTS : The family of Brud Cronkrite has requested this designation as a memorial to Army Sergeant Cronkrite, who was killed on May 14, 2004 in Iraq while deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Brud Cronkrite was born in June 24, 1981. He enlisted in the Army as a 19K Armor Crewman on March 1, 2002. On May 11, 2003, Sergeant Cronkrite deployed with his unit to Kuwait and a year later moved with Task Force 1037 to the City of Karbala in Iraq. His division was scheduled to return home when its assignment was extended. Sergeant Cronkrite died in Baghdad on May 14, 2004, from injuries sustained in Karbala when a rocket-propelled SCR 32 Page 2 grenade fired into a building near him during a security patrol. He was 22 years old. Sergeant Cronkrite was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and is buried at the Fort Rosencrans Cemetery. He was the 775th American soldier to be killed in the Iraq War.
